From our organization as a parish in 1815 to today, St. John's Church has provided a powerful symbol of faith in the heart of our nation's capital.

Located at the corner of 16th and H Streets in Northwest Washington, St. John's is near the McPherson Square and Farragut North Metro stations. Limited street parking is available; free valet parking is offered for certain hours.

Holy Week 2021 Schedule draft

The services that occur during Holy Week provide a liturgical experience of the last days of Jesus’ earthly life, as well as the time and events leading up to his resurrection. St. John’s invites you to gather with us (and millions of Christians throughout the world) during these most sacred days. Listed below are daily opportunities for reflection, prayer, music, and fellowship as we prepare to greet the Risen Christ.

Tuesday | March 30

Spoken Compline at 8:00 p.m.

The last of the four services in the Daily Office, Compline is a simple service, yet meaningful one, as it brings the day to a close in the awareness of Christ’s presence.

Wednesday | March 31

Lamentations: Music and Reflections for Holy Week at 6:00 p.m.

A pre-recorded offering from musicians of the St. John’s Choir accompanied by scripture readings.

Streamed on the St. John’s Facebook page (watch with fellow parishioners) and on the St. John’s Worship Page.

Maundy Thursday | April 1

Worship Service at 7:00 p.m.

This service commemorates the institution of the eucharist by Jesus (“Maundy” comes from the Latin mandatum novum, “new commandment”) and includes the ceremony of foot washing. Bread and wine consecrated for Holy Eucharist on Maundy Thursday are reserved for communion on Good Friday. At the end of the service, the altar is stripped.

Good Friday | April 2

Worship Service at 12:00 noon

The day on which the crucifixion of Jesus is commemorated. Communion from the Reserved Sacrament will be offered.

Good Friday | April 2

Worship Service at 12:00 noon

The day on which the crucifixion of Jesus is commemorated. Communion from the Reserved Sacrament will be offered.

Easter Day | April 4

Morning Worship Services at 9:00 a.m. and 11:00 a.m.

The Feast of the Resurrection of Christ celebrated with a Festival Holy Eucharist.

(NEW) The Easter service will be livestreamed on the St. John’s Facebook page and on the St. John’s Worship page at 11:00 a.m.

Easter Day Afternoon Outdoor Worship | April 4

3:00 p.m.

Music, Prayer, and Distribution of Communion. You will need to sign in with an usher when you arrive agreeing to our St. John’s Church Regathering Covenant, but you do not need to pre-register. Maps and other information are below:

The service at Virginia Theological Seminary will be more casual and perfect for families, with an Easter egg hunt to follow.
