From our organization as a parish in 1815 to today, St. John's Church has provided a powerful symbol of faith in the heart of our nation's capital.

At St. John's, we believe Christ is calling us to be a renewed church in a changing world. In worship, education, parish life, and social action, we seek to expand our horizons by serving God by loving one another.

The Rev. Doug Kirby

The Rev. Doug Kirby is a graduate of the Virginia Theological Seminary. He has impressive life experiences from a 27-year career in the Army, in which he rose to the rank of colonel. As you will find, he is both a gifted leader, and has the heart of a faithful servant. His faith runs deep, and he is very much a people person.

As he puts it, he is “excited to begin his ministry as a priest at St. John’s, and to seek to help others experience Christ in the sacraments as well as in day-to-day life, building individuals and community, and being a companion to others in living lives of faith.”

Many of the duties in the Associate Rector portfolio will be natural to him, especially with his strong organizational gifts, but there will also be areas in which he will be learning new things. He embraces that challenge and will apply himself wholeheartedly, especially with ministry to children and families.

When not in the parish, he is “Chief of Staff to two Labrador retrievers,” whom he loves dearly.
